Weve looked at and tested three printers in the Samsung Xpress series over the past year, so you might say. The feature sets suited different needs and checkbooks, but the genetic similarities stood out physical appearance, software configurability, print manager options, and the like. Its like watching multiple episodes of a Masterpiece Theater series where successive generations of lords balance the familys finances and political power, amidst amorous intrigues involving the maids of the manse. A different story each episode, but in the end, its no mystery why all the kids have the same nose and jawline. The Xpress M2. 82. DW we tested is a single function monochrome laser printer, and the Xpress M2. W is much the same printer, but with Near Field Communication NFC technology added. The subject of our review here today, the Xpress Multifunction M2. FW 2. 99 list, but selling for 1. M2. 02. 0W, but with the big three all in one AIO printer features tacked on faxing, copying, and scanning. And we do literally mean tacked on. The odd thing is that Samsung didnt expand the single function printers chassis or change the appearance very much to include all the new functionality. Instead, it looks like the designers simply stuck the AIO additions atop one of the single function Xpress models The base is the same squat, flat rectangle with rounded corners in stone gray plastic just as beforean ugly duckling, as we called it, in our Xpress M2. DW review. Only now, that chassis has a new, irregular section sitting above it and overlapping the front and back, in a handsome matte black. So unalike are the two sections in color and styling that its as though someone grafted two different printers together The unit is 1. Franken look and feel, roughly two inches of the depth is overhang from the top faxcopyscan section. At that size, the M2. FW is really too large to fit comfortably on a desktop, and at almost 1. Its not suitable for stuffing on a bookshelf either, given that so much of its functionality is tied to controls and feeds that you access from the top down. Contrast that with the front facing controls and paper feeder on the Dell B1. W Mono Laser Multifunction, a competing all in one. Youll be best off placing the M2. FW about three or four feet off the ground on a table or storage cart, for easy access to all its controls. The new top portion does has some advantages. Unlike its earlier printer only Xpress relations, the M2. FW has an output tray that isnt just an indentation in the top of the chassis with foldout flaps. And, as you can see, its got an automatic document feeder up top shaped like the top of a grand piano One of the less attractive features of this new design, though, is that the output tray for scanned and copied documents is directly underneath that feeder You have to lift the feeder slightly to get to your pages, which is a tad awkward. That aside, having an automatic feeder that holds up to 4. We also liked the adjustable paper guides on the feeder, which you can reduce from a maximum width of just under 9 inches to 5. Also, to the left of the feeder is a tap spot for NFC linking Thats on the document feeders flip up cover. Well get into NFC a little later. The only reason youll need to open that cover, though, is for cleaning purposes or clearing jams. Beyond that cover, this printer flips up in a whole variety of ways, thanks to a multi layered design. Pull up on the top level, and it cants back on a hinge to reveal the scanner platen The glass bed measures 1. It can manage A4, as well. Fronting the scanner bed is the M2. FWs control panel. It doesnt feel cramped, and everything is clearly labeled, though we wish the display readout were large enough to show more than a couple of short lines at a time To the far left are buttons for the handy ID Copy feature it helps you photocopy both sides of an ID card on a single sheet of papermanual feed, only, adjusting the brightness level which for some reason, Samsung labels Darkness, Eco mode, and Wi Fi Protected Setup WPS, for wireless network configuration. Under the display is a status LED, and to the right of the display are buttons for switching among the copy, fax, and scan functions. The usual wheel for working with the display is further right, with an OK button at its center. Further right, we come to the expected grid of alphanumeric buttons, and then three buttons for the address book storing and accessing fax numbers, redialpause, and on hook dialing which lets you hear the dial tone and fax numbers entered. Finally, we have four big buttons for stopclear, start, powerwake up, and power saverthe last putting the printer into sleep mode. Its a pretty good physical mix for walk up faxing, for those who still rely heavily on the fax function. If you lift the control panel, you reveal a second layer of the printer the output tray, which is mostly internal in the M2. FW A support flap comes out of the front, if you need it to prop up bigger print jobs. The tray can hold up to 1. This isnt a workhorse printer, in other words, despite its functionality, and best suited for lighter personal use. Now, heres the tricky part. If you want access to the toner cartridge, you have two options. You can either pull up on the inside of the rectangular hole on the right, or on the part of the output flap closest to the printers front edge. Both are cumbersome, and in both cases should be pulled gently so as not to break the plastic. This is not the first Xpress unit to have similar issues. Samsung should look into a better grip or a handle here. That brings us to the third layer of the printer, the cartridge level As with other Xpress models, the M2. FWs cartridge is easily accessible and slides naturally into place. As for paper input, the main input tray is located under the Samsung logo You can just make out the paper guides in the picture above, inconveniently placed inside the printers body. Making matters more difficult is that you have to squeeze together the two pieces of the paper guide on the right to get the guides to move. Were not sure why thats necessary, seeing as the guides for the ADF slide perfectly well without any squeeze release. The sides of the printer possess only vents, but the back is interesting Why the big recess in the back of the printerWe suspect the outer frame of the bottom half was extended to provide support for the significantly larger top section, but the parts inside the frame werent expanded to make use of the greater space. As you can see above, you have to open the curving over side panel to get at the outlets USB and network ports, dedicated and shared use fax lines, and the power connection. Its not an overly elegant design, and when you snap the side panel closed, it pushes against the wires and the USB cord, if you go that connection route. The best that can be said of it Its on the back of the M2. FW rather than the front, so you dont have to look at it and wonder whether the cable pressure its exerting on the connectors might eventually affect them. Setup Features. The initial setup of all three recent Samsung Xpress printers weve reviewed was much the same. Some Styrofoam and plenty of blue plastic packing tabs had to go, with one of the latter wrapped sneakily around the toner cartridge.
